Evander Holyfield Criticizes Current Boxing Champions

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has criticized modern boxers for not facing the best rivals, contrasting with his era. He specifically mentioned Julio César Chávez as the greatest and 'Canelo' Álvarez as a good fighter who needs to prove himself against top contenders. Holyfield also voiced his disapproval of YouTubers entering the sport and criticized Dana White's new boxing venture.

An exhibition of the world's most valuable boxing memorabilia, including gloves worn by Evander Holyfield, which were sold at auction, highlighting the problem of preserving such ephemera in sport. "In the boxing ring, something that seemed impossible happened. Later we fought with everyone, and the box was more important. I had to live my whole life so that this would be possible," said 63-year-old Holyfield, who revolutionized the sport.

There were also discussions with Mexican legends. "Everyone was just the best. We need to set up champions with the ones who are at the top of the mountain, but that doesn't happen," said Holyfield, naming Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. as the "Superexican" champion in history. This was the Saul "Can" Alvarez, whom the champ called his talisman, but added: "Can - the only boxer, but in the last fight against Floyd he received many blows and had to win."

Holyfield also revealed the secret to his professional "uber" box, which, according to him, is linked to the desire to be better. "This should earn a lot of money, and they do it," he said. The former UFC heavyweight champion Dan White said he wanted to create an alternative organization by boxing rules, which would be a mimic of traditional champions. "It's easy to talk about boxing, if you don't mind this sport. I never fought anyone in my life—we beat each other," he said, recalling his friendship with Jake Paul and the champion Mike Tyson.

Noting the episode of 1997, when Mike Tyson bit his ear, Holyfield said that these sobriety were long gone. "With Mike, we had no problem. The difference is that we showed all the best from ourselves," he added.

Holyfield appeared at a press conference in Mexico, and stated that in this era of boxing, he did not select the best fighters, but fought for the title and the belts.
