The clashes between capital clubs in Liga MX usually guarantee a great spectacle and many goals. This Saturday, all eyes in Mexico will be on the Estadio Olímpico Universitario to witness a new edition of the rivalry between Pumas and Cruz Azul.
The leader of the league's general classification enters one of the most complicated grounds in Mexican football to face a well-performing Pumas team. César Huerta stated: "We have worked hard and improved, the team looks solid. We don't consider ourselves favorites; we have to prove that on the pitch, but we will do everything possible to be seen as one of them."
In the last five matches at Ciudad Universitaria between Pumas and Cruz Azul, La Máquina has shown its quality, tipping the balance in its favor with three victories, one draw, and one Pumas win. The last time the universitarios defeated Cruz Azul at home was in Apertura 2021 in matchday 17 with a score of 4-3.
Before the highly anticipated match, Chino Huerta described the confrontation as a preliminary playoff game, aware of the difficulty of facing Cruz Azul, the leader of the championship. The Pumas' scorer declared: "It’s a Liguila match; it will be very difficult because Cruz Azul has been doing things well, and that's why they're in first place and have the points they do, but we know that if we aim to be champions, we have to beat the best; it’s a good benchmark."
The national team player from Pumas added that despite the five consecutive matches without losing in Liga MX, the team does not consider itself favorites. The left winger asserted that within Pumas, they are clear that they must demonstrate all their capacity and effort on the pitch during the match: "The recent results and our position in the table back us up."
