A confrontation between hitmen and agents from the Attorney General's Office (FGE) in Acapulco, Guerrero, left a toll of four presumed attackers killed and three unofficially detained. The confrontation occurred around noon when a patrol from the Ministerial Investigative Police (PIM) was attacked by armed individuals.
Guerrero authorities have indicated that such confrontations could be a reaction to the arrests made by the three levels of government in the port against organized crime leaders in recent months. In response to these violent reactions, the presence of federal and state forces in the region has increased.
Minutes after the confrontation, an alert call mobilized authorities due to the appearance of a dead man's wreath with a message written on a poster left outside the Federal Palace. The message was directed at José Luis Pichardo, director of Material Resources for the Acapulco municipal government, accusing him of having a romantic relationship with a married woman.
The anonymous message also referred to a spending of nearly 2 million pesos for the rental of an ice rink by official Pichardo, which generated criticism from citizens. So far, the municipal government has not issued comments on this incident nor on the allegations against its officials.
After the confrontation, weapons and useful cartridges were secured at the crime scene, although the quantity was not specified. The magnitude of the attack prompted a broad security deployment involving the Navy Secretariat, the National Defense Secretariat, the National Guard, and the State Police, with aerial support from two Navy helicopters for tactical support flyovers and to reinforce surveillance.
