In a previous transmission related to the promotion of the same event, the negative comments were so numerous that the publication was removed from its social media. Testimonials collected by local media and comments from users in citizen groups suggest that the discomfort is not only due to traffic congestion, but also to what they perceive as insensitivity from the municipal government towards the reality faced by a large part of the population.
Some messages highlighted that while security operations were guaranteed for the mayor's event, in popular neighborhoods, surveillance is scarce or non-existent. One of the most recurrent points raised was the coincidence of the event with the murder of a public transport driver that occurred hours earlier, who had participated in a protest to demand safety conditions. However, the official responded that at that moment she would only speak about the ongoing event, avoiding commenting on recent criminal acts.
On social media, various users pointed out that the logistics of the public event did not consider the implications it would have for traffic on one of the busiest avenues in the city, especially during the holiday season. The relevance of holding such an event in a context marked by violent incidents and a growing perception of insecurity was also called into question.
This is not the first time that an activity led by Abelina López has generated rejection on digital platforms. On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 16, the municipal government of Acapulco closed one of the lanes of the Costera Miguel Alemán avenue to traffic, in the section from the Zócalo to the Diana Cazadora, to hold an event led by Mayor Abelina López Rodríguez. This decision generated heavy traffic and affected motorists, in addition to a wave of discontent expressed both on social media and in public spaces.
The event, streamed live by the mayor on her official account, was subject to numerous criticisms. Although the publication garnered over 390 comments, at the time of writing this note, only about 60 remained visible, most of them positive. Users rated the image projected by the mayor's office as unfortunate and insensitive by organizing a celebration on the same day the crime was recorded. Users reported that criticisms and questions had been hidden or deleted, which generated new reactions regarding the lack of openness to receive contrary opinions.
Before the scheduled walk on the Costera, local media tried to question the municipal president about the resurgence of violence that in the last 48 hours resulted in 14 people being murdered in different parts of the port.
