Elements of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), through the Mexican Navy acting as a Coast Guard, seized 80 bales with approximately two tons of alleged cocaine in the waters of the Mexican Pacific. The seizure occurred more than 200 nautical miles south-southwest of the coasts of Acapulco, Guerrero, in an operation coordinated with the Attorney General's Office (FGR) and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). According to the official communiqué, naval personnel deployed aircraft, an ocean patrol vessel, and a smaller vessel to locate the bales containing the illicit substance. This was all done based on prior intelligence information. The preliminary gross weight of the shipment is around two tons, although the exact weight will be determined by the authorities once the vessel arrives at port and the corresponding procedures are carried out. The seized bales will be made available to the corresponding Public Ministry agent, who will compile the case file upon the vessel's arrival in port. These types of seizures not only remove drugs from circulation. They also represent a direct hit to the pockets of criminal groups. "These actions are part of the maritime surveillance operations carried out by the Secretariat of the Navy through the Mexican Navy to curb the action of criminal groups and represent a significant impact on their financial structures," the text highlights. The authorities of the Security Cabinet reiterated that they will maintain maritime and air surveillance operations in national waters to guarantee the rule of law in Mexican maritime zones. For now, the seized shipment is in the process of being made available to the corresponding authorities, while investigations continue to determine its origin and final destination. High-seas surveillance strikes crime again.
