The famous Mexican regional music band, Grupo Firme, decided to join initiatives aimed at eradicating violence in music. This decision came shortly after the local Congress of Aguascalientes banned the performance of narcocorridos at both public and private events, a regulation that will be enforced before the celebration of the Feria de San Marcos.
Grupo Firme has two concerts scheduled at the fair, being responsible for inaugurating the Palenque on the first day of the event, April 19, and performing again the following day. In light of this new measure, the governor of Aguascalientes, Tere Jiménez, expressed a desire for peace and respect to prevail in Mexican culture.
At the Feria de San Marcos, other musicians known for performing narcocorridos, such as Gabito Ballesteros, Natanael Cano, Alfredo Olivas, and Junior H, will also perform. If any of these artists violate the regulation and sing songs that promote violence, they could face prison sentences of 6 months to 1 year.
Grupo Firme expressed its support for the initiatives for violence-free music promoted by Claudia Sheinbaum, prior to officially announcing the decision to stop performing narcocorridos. They stated that they are not a band that sings this type of songs and will follow the example of other artists who have chosen to stay away from lyrics that may incite violence.
Eduin Caz, the vocalist of Grupo Firme, explained that although the corridos they perform are fictional and do not reflect the reality of drug traffickers, they decided to stop singing them. In a press conference and in an interview with the news agency EFE, Caz shared that their new album will not include this type of songs, as they prefer to focus on themes of love and heartbreak, distancing themselves from the glorification of violence.
Another well-known singer, Luis R. Conriquez, also recently announced that he has decided to stop performing narcocorridos, joining the stance against this type of music.
