Tension in the PAN over Possible Candidacies

The situation in the PAN is stirring with the reactivation of Anaya and Márquez as candidates for coordination, raising concerns among senators due to Anaya's background and Téllez's confrontational style.

Tension in the PAN over Possible Candidacies

In certain meetings among senators, Francisco Ramírez Acuña expressed that Anaya spoke very well, but recalled that he handed the country over to López Obrador. In light of Anaya's movements, the former governor Márquez, who currently leads the most influential political group of the PAN in Guanajuato, stepped into action.

Until recently, it seemed clear that Guadalupe Mungía would continue as coordinator in the Senate. However, now both Ricardo Anaya and the former governor of Guanajuato, Miguel Márquez, have emerged as possible candidates to lead.

Anaya's candidacy generated agitation, as despite his good performances in the upper house, many senators believe that his more recent background makes him a questionable profile: his prolonged absence during the previous six-year term, his constant immunity, and his entry into the Senate through a negotiated pluri route with Marko Cortés, who led the party to a disastrous election last year.

Márquez is confident that he has more support than Anaya and thus revives the brief competition they had in 2018, when both were seeking the presidential candidacy. Lilly Téllez has also shown interest in the coordination, but some in the group are concerned about her confrontational and uncontrollable style when talking about the Government.

Overall, there is not much enthusiasm regarding Anaya's proposal. Some signs of this were seen in December, when Anaya's usual eloquence was highlighted. This week, the PAN will hold its plenary meeting of senators in Aguascalientes, the only state where Claudia Sheinbaum did not win last year.
