In the town of Tameapa, municipality of Badiraguato, Sinaloa, the collapse of a mine has been reported, leaving several people trapped. Although it was initially reported that at least five miners were trapped, elements of the Municipal Civil Protection have confirmed the recovery of the body of one miner, reportedly the machine operator, whose identity has not yet been revealed.
The municipal president of Badiraguato, José Paz López, went to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts. Local residents have also approached the mine for information about the trapped workers, but all have not yet been identified.
The state governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, has ordered the immediate intervention of Civil Protection personnel, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard to participate in rescue tasks. So far, the death of one miner has been confirmed, and it is estimated that at least five people remain trapped inside the mine, located in Potrero de Tepeaca, north of the town of Los Alisos.
The collapse occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, with 10 workers present at the time of the accident. Laura Velázquez, National Coordinator of Civil Protection, has arrived at the scene to supervise rescue efforts, following instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum.
So far, the causes of the collapse at the Badiraguato mine have not been clarified. Laura Velázquez, who previously supervised rescue efforts at a mine in Sabinas, Coahuila, where nine miners lost their lives in an accident in August 2022, continues to support the search and rescue of the trapped miners in this recent mining tragedy.
