
In Chilpancingo, an Ayotzinapa student died in a confrontation that took place on Thursday night, reported President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He clarified that this incident is not related to the protests in support of the 43 missing students, but to the celebrations for the 98th anniversary of the 'Raúl Isidro Burgos' Rural Normal School in Ayotzinapa.
'It is very regrettable that this situation has arisen a day after a protest took place at the National Palace, which is already known; however, they are different matters,' said López Obrador referring to the demolition of a door at the presidential residence by Ayotzinapa students.
In other news, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, governor of Michoacán, announced that the Attorney General's Office of Michoacán has located eight bodies in a clandestine grave in the municipality of Jacona, contradicting previous reports mentioning 15 bodies. The Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) will be asked to take the case for a more thorough investigation.
During a morning conference in Morelia on International Women's Day, various officials of the Fourth Transformation highlighted the role of women in the government and Mexican society. Among those present were Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Ariadna Montiel, Leticia Ramírez, Raquel Buenrostro, Alejandra Frausto, María Luisa Albores, Alicia Bárcena, and Luisa María Alcalde, who gave emotional speeches at the event.
Regarding Canada's decision to require visas for Mexicans, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena explained that this is due to the increase in asylum requests in recent years and the high cost of maintaining these individuals under such status. Asylum applications from Mexicans in Canada rose from 3,000 in 2021 to nearly 26,000 in 2023. Bárcena detailed that every seven applicants cost Canada 100 million dollars due to the lengthy and expensive process involved.
On the other hand, intentional homicides in Michoacán have increased by 5.4% in January 2024, according to the Secretary of National Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval. Although the figures do not match those of the Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, which reported 156 cases in January, showing a rise of 6.8% compared to December 2023 and a decrease from the peak of 2,233 cases reported in 2021.
