Three women, including a female official, and one man were killed in three separate incidents in the Mexican state of Guerrero on Monday, security sources reported. The victims included Jessica Macedonio Saldaña, the municipal secretary of health in Atlixtac, and her male assistant. According to police, they were traveling on the federal highway when they were intercepted by armed men, who forced them out of their vehicle and shot them near the community of Tepozonalco. The woman's body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo), where it remains unidentified. Subsequently, residents of the Renacimiento neighborhood in the state capital, Chilpancingo, discovered three black plastic bags containing human remains. Authorities arrived at the scene and found the dismembered body of a woman, distributed among the bags. In another incident of violence, a woman was shot and killed in a neighborhood of the port of Acapulco. Security reports indicated that armed men pursued the woman, caught up with her, and attacked her with firearms. Emergency services arrived, but she was already dead. So far this year, 11 homicides have been recorded, with one case classified as femicide, and with Monday's incidents, the total would rise to 13 murders in 2024. "Atlixtac is a municipality that bets on peace, social stability, and respect for the rule of law. Any act that threatens the tranquility of our community must be investigated with responsibility and in compliance with the law," the mayor stated. Before the homicides were known, members of various women's collectives held a press conference to call for the March 8th march, commemorating International Women's Day. Women's organizations have documented 282 women murdered in Guerrero in 2024, with only 22 cases classified as femicides. Last year, 133 murders were recorded, with only 15 classified as femicides.
