The former head of the Office of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, retired Captain Germán Reyes Reyes, was placed in justified preventive detention for his alleged participation in the murder of former mayor Alejandro Arcos Catalán. This was decided after an arraignment hearing in the Control and Criminal Proceedings Court, where the judge ordered this precautionary measure.
Germán Reyes' defense requested an extension of the constitutional term to gather evidence to prove his innocence, claiming he pleaded not guilty and that he is a victim of a 'political issue.' The hearing to resolve the link to the process is scheduled for next November 18.
According to the Attorney General's Office of the State of Guerrero (FGE), the cause of death of Arcos Catalán was massive hemorrhaging due to decapitation with a blunt instrument. It was mentioned that the motive for the murder was related to the former mayor's refusal to accept impositions from officials in his cabinet, supposedly linked to organized crime.
During the hearing, the Attorney General's Office presented data indicating that the murder occurred by orders from Reyes to members of the local criminal group 'Los Ardillos.' It also presented interviews with relatives of the victim, security camera videos, and an anonymous email from an alleged municipal police officer, among other evidence.
A key witness in the case, Domitilo Cándido Pila, a merchant who provided information about the crime, was found dead shortly afterward. According to the narrative presented by the Attorney General's Office, Cándido was released under threat after hearing the alleged order from Reyes to commit the murder, and he was later found deceased.
Germán Reyes' defense argued that the preventive detention was disproportionate, as the accused was arrested at his workplace and claimed that he does not pose a risk to the victims or witnesses, with whom he has had no contact.
