Sheinbaum Reiterates Mexico's Sovereignty in Face of Tariffs

Claudia Sheinbaum, president of Mexico, emphasizes the importance of national sovereignty and cooperation with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking, rejecting external impositions, during a public event in Colima.

Two days before Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her rejection of any foreign subordination and highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking. During a public event in Colima, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico must be treated as an equal and not subjected to policies imposed from Washington.

"Cooperation, coordination yes, subordination never," declared the president in response to the confirmation that the tariffs will come into effect on March 4. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, its main trading partners, since his return to the White House.

The imposition of tariffs was paused for a month amid U.S. demands for greater Mexican intervention in the fight against organized crime and the migration crisis. Sheinbaum defended national sovereignty and emphasized that the relationship with the U.S. should be based on mutual collaboration, not imposition.

The president assured that Mexico is a brave, free, and independent country that deserves respect in the international arena. Committed to combating organized crime and drug trafficking, Sheinbaum reaffirmed her position to do so under Mexican terms, without yielding to external pressures.

As part of her visit to Colima, Sheinbaum launched the "Housing for Wellbeing" program, which plans to build 13,250 homes in the state, benefiting more than 42,400 people. This program is part of her government's commitment to building one million homes nationwide, aiming to offer adequate, accessible housing solutions close to basic services and urban areas.

Sheinbaum highlighted that 50% of the land allocated for the project in Colima will be designated for green and recreational areas, emphasizing the importance of holistic well-being in housing development policies.
