The incident occurred amid actions by state and federal governments to reduce armed clashes in Culiacán, one of the cities with the highest presence of criminal groups in the region. A security operation in the Barcelona sector, north of Culiacán, resulted in the seizure of military-exclusive use weapons and a stolen vehicle, after armed civilians opened fire on state police. When they pursued the vehicle, the occupants got out and opened fire on the officers before fleeing to a nearby vacant lot and hiding in the undergrowth. Additionally, agents recovered a 2021 Nissan sedan model with an active theft report. According to the statement, the weapons and the vehicle were made available to the Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) to initiate the corresponding investigations. 'These actions reflect our commitment to safeguarding the tranquility of the citizenry and preventing high-powered weapons from falling into the hands of organized crime,' the department stated in its release.
