Police Commander Shot in Culiacán

A Culiacán police commander was shot at by armed individuals on Saturday morning. The officer was injured, and his vehicle overturned during the chase. A bystander was also lightly injured. Authorities are searching for the attackers.

A Municipal Police commander of Culiacán, identified as Luis Gilberto “N”, aged between 35 and 40, was shot at on Saturday morning while off-duty. The officer was injured but was taken alive to a hospital, where he remains stable under medical observation, according to local media citing reports from the Public Security Secretariat. The attack occurred around 7:20 AM in the vicinity of the Las Quintas neighborhood and Paseo Niños Héroes. According to journalistic accounts, the commander was driving a recent-model, four-door white Toyota Hilux when a group of armed individuals pulled up alongside his vehicle and opened fire. The aggressors were traveling in an unidentified unit, also described as a recent model. The pursuit extended through several points in the area, including Vicente Guerrero Avenue, the area near the Culiacán zoo, the Old Malecón, the Benito Juárez Bridge, Niños Héroes Avenue, the monument to José María Morelos, and Xicoténcatl Avenue. In an attempt to escape, the police commander accelerated to evade the attackers, but after being wounded, he lost control of the pickup truck and crashed into a garden bed, causing the vehicle to overturn next to a rainwater channel. After calling for backup, the commander was attended to by emergency teams and taken to a hospital. He had bullet wounds and bruises from the crash. His vehicle was left with multiple bullet impacts. A Psychology student from the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS) was injured when she was hit by shrapnel from a firearm in her arm. The injury was minor and did not require hospitalization, according to preliminary reports. Elements of the Culiacán Municipal Police, the National Defense Secretariat, the Red Cross, and the State Prosecutor's Office arrived at the scene, secured the area, and initiated the investigation. The municipal authority informed that support will be provided to the commander and his family during his recovery, while investigations continue to identify and arrest those responsible.
