
On the morning of Friday, January 31st in Culiacán, Sinaloa, a high-ranking official of the State Attorney General's Office was shot at by an armed group. This tragic incident resulted in the death of one of the commander's bodyguards and left the commander himself seriously injured, who was immediately taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.
This attack took place on Jesús Kumate Boulevard, located at the exit of the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway, specifically at the intersection with Las Torres Avenue, right in front of the facilities of the Regional Livestock Union of Sinaloa. The injured commander is Héctor Ricardo Acosta Valenzuela, also known as "El R-3" or "Commander Canelo," who was traveling in a white Sentra vehicle at the time of the attack.
In the town of Costa Rica, 35 kilometers south of Culiacán, a tragic confrontation was recorded the previous day, resulting in 10 homicides, including five civilians and two military personnel. This incident adds to a series of attacks against both state and federal authorities in Sinaloa, marking the fifth occurrence of this nature.
The clashes and acts of violence are part of the territorial struggle between the Los Chapitos and La Mayiza cartels, which has created a climate of insecurity in various localities of Sinaloa since September 9th. Authorities have been targeted, including municipal police of Culiacán and Mazatlán, as well as a member of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, which has generated concern and shock in the region.
Commander Canelo was being escorted by a security group when he was intercepted and attacked by an armed group, which resulted in the death of one of the bodyguards and left the others injured. Numerous shell casings were found at the scene, confirming the violence of the attack suffered. Currently, the injured commander is being treated in a hospital, fighting for his life after this cowardly attack.
