Identification of the Missing Journalist in Culiacán

The Sonoran journalist Jesús Alberto Camacho Rodríguez, missing for five years, was found at the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The discovery was confirmed by the Commission for the Search of Persons for the State of Sonora on February 19. Although he was originally from Hermosillo, he developed his work as a communicator in Cajeme, one of the most violent municipalities in the region. Camacho Rodríguez worked in various local media such as El Regional de Sonora, Extra de la Tarde, Tribuna del Yaqui, and El Imparcial.

The remains of the journalist were reported by the group Mothers Searching for Sonora, who informed that the body was at the Semefo in Culiacán. Despite not having a missing person report in either Sinaloa or Sonora, the identification of the journalist was achieved thanks to cooperation with the National Electoral Institute and support from the United Nations Population Fund. This case adds to other similar cases in the region where bodies remain unidentified in morgues.

The body of Jesús Alberto Camacho was located in a clandestine grave on Pedro Infante Boulevard and Olmo Street, in the Olmo channel, Las Flores neighborhood, on October 28, 2021, according to the Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office. The leader of the Sabuesos Guerreras group, María Isabel Cruz Bernal, expressed her concern about the deficiencies in the institutions responsible for searching for missing persons, highlighting the need for a timely response in these cases.

In July 2024, the case of Alberto de Jesús Verdugo Rivera came to light, whose remains had remained for nearly four years at the Semefo in Culiacán before being delivered to his mother. The Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office launched search cards that include unclaimed bodies, despite being identified through fingerprints. The aim of this initiative is to facilitate the return of remains to their families, providing an opportunity to end the uncertainty for many loved ones.
