Sheinbaum: US Must Stop Arms Shipments to Mexico

President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Saturday that if the United States wants Mexico to curb drug trafficking, it must also stop the illicit shipment of weapons into Mexican territory, while emphasizing that the population in Sinaloa is not alone in the face of organized crime violence. «If they don't want us to help stop the flow of drugs from Mexico to the United States, they also have to do their part to stop the flow of weapons from the United States to Mexico», she said. During an event in Culiacán, the head of state affirmed that the state of Sinaloa «is not alone» and that she as president and all of Mexico are «here». She added that the Armed Forces and the full Cabinet are in Sinaloa and noted that, despite the complexity of the crisis, it is possible to move forward if there is unity. «Sinaloa is work, it is tourism, let our neighbors and the whole world hear it, let Culiacán live and let Sinaloa live. No matter how difficult the problems are, if we are together, we always move forward», she assured. The head of state reiterated that «sovereignty is not negotiable» and that Mexico is a «free, independent, and sovereign» country where «we, the Mexicans, decide». In turn, the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, thanked the presence of federal forces in the state and said that without that support, «we would still be having» security problems, although he added that they are not completely resolved. He mentioned the Army, the National Guard, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and the Navy as part of the deployment to address the situation. Rocha stated that the central objective in Sinaloa is to regain peace «to keep producing» and asked to maintain care measures in the entity. The governor also linked the security strategy with social and «justice» programs, highlighting programs aimed at women and youth, as well as health care.
