In Culiacán, Sinaloa, flyers signed allegedly by 'La Mayiza' have appeared, thrown and collected by people on Tuesday, October 22. These flyers call on the citizens of Sinaloa to report the abuses committed by 'Los Chapitos', a branch of the Sinaloa Cartel. The text expresses the intention to enter Culiacán, restore order, and end the abuses committed by 'los chapos'. A phone number is provided for reports and is signed by 'La Mayiza', along with a logo that includes the initials MF, associated with Ismael Zambada Sicairos, also known as 'Mayito Flaco'.
The Sinaloa Cartel has two main groups: one led by 'Los Chapitos', the sons of 'El Chapo' Guzmán, and another led by 'El Mayo' Zambada and his allies, including 'La Mayiza'. The former are in an internal struggle against 'El Mayo' for the leadership of the cartel. Following the detention of Ismael Zambada on July 25, violence in Sinaloa has increased, particularly in Culiacán and other municipalities.
The Secretary of Public Security of Sinaloa, Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, suggests that the flyers could be a distraction, as the provided phone number is blocked. He indicates that the matter falls under federal jurisdiction, so it would be up to the Army to investigate. These flyers, thrown in Culiacán early in the morning via a drone, add to other occasions when alarming messages have been sent to the population, with threats and accusations against various public figures.
In September, the launch of pamphlets against 'Los Chapitos' was reported, showing the names of 19 individuals, including Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, accused of crimes. On that occasion, a number associated with U.S. authorities and the National Defense Secretariat was also left. The flyers and messages launched in Culiacán, Los Mochis, and Mazatlán have raised concerns in the region about the possibility of an increase in violence and reprisals among criminal groups.
