The Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, reappeared in public after a long absence at the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum to report on the information requested from U.S. authorities regarding the detention of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada. Gertz Manero pointed out in the conference that although they have requested information on all international judicial processes, U.S. authorities have not shared it in full and that they will continue to insist on obtaining it.
Gertz Manero had stayed away from public events in recent years due to rumors about his health condition in late 2022. In February 2023, he reappeared by participating in an event of the Mexican Bar Association (BMCA) and in July 2024 it was announced that his salary increased to 190,035 pesos monthly according to an agreement issued by the prosecutor. The remuneration agreement for public servants of the FGR for the fiscal year 2024 was modified, aligning it with the state's salary policies.
Journalist Darío Celis published in January 2023 that Gertz Manero was being treated at a specialized oncology clinic in Baltimore, United States. Celis mentioned that the prosecutor suffers from pancreatic cancer and there are fears that the tumor has spread. In addition, it was noted that Gertz Manero did not attend a meeting between the security cabinets of Mexico and the United States in January of the same year.
After the detention of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, questions arose in the media since Mexican authorities were not aware of the operation by the Americans. Gertz Manero claimed that U.S. authorities have not shared all the requested information regarding the case, despite having reported part of it. At Sheinbaum's morning conference, the prosecutor reiterated the importance of obtaining all information related to the arrest of 'El Mayo' Zambada.
