Over 700 animals that were found in cramped and abusive conditions in a home in the Las Américas II subdivision were rescued by elements of the Ecatepec municipal police and the Mexican Navy. Among the species are mainly birds, turtles, dogs, reptiles, and sheep. The Municipal Legal Counselor, Environment, and the State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office, who also participated in the operation, indicated that most of the animals were found in cages in a property that appeared to be squatted. Luis Alberto López Pérez, municipal legal advisor, explained that after a citizen's report alerted to the existence of hundreds of animals in a home allegedly occupied by the 'Los 300' group, the intervention of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Land Developers and Environmental Crime, based in Texcoco, was requested. With a search warrant from a control judge, the house located in Condominio Brasil was raided by judicial and municipal authorities, where they found cages with hundreds of cramped animals whose lives were at risk. 'There appears to be a legal conflict over the property, but we also have reports that after the municipal intervention to secure the property, the residents abandoned the animals,' the official explained. Inside, 658 birds, 11 sheep and goats, 24 turtles, one tarantula, 12 snakes, one Alicante lizard, and two albino guinea fowls were found, which were channeled to the Autonomous University of Chapingo for monitoring, observation, and care.
