Ecatepec Launches Comprehensive Security Plan

In Ecatepec, the most populated municipality in Mexico, 51 criminal gangs involved in activities such as extortion, drug dealing, homicides, and violent robberies have been identified. In response to this situation, the local government presented the Comprehensive Public Security Plan, which will receive support from state and federal governments, primarily from the Navy Secretariat.

Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss emphasized that Ecatepec is a priority for President Claudia Sheinbaum, which is why one hundred elements from the Navy Secretariat will be deployed in the area. The 10 neighborhoods that will be the focus of attention to combat crime are Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Jardines de Morelos, Santa María Chiconautla, among others.

The security plan includes ten actions that are already underway, such as the presence of community policing, the installation of 10,000 neighborhood alarms, the training and equipping of police officers, the placement of three thousand new surveillance cameras, the use of drones for aerial surveillance, and programs to assist young people and combat addictions, among other measures.

Edgar Antonio Machado Peña, Commissioner of Citizen Security and Municipal Transit, who is also the Commander of the Marine Infantry Battalion, mentioned that a security model similar to that of Nezahualcóyotl will be implemented, focusing on citizen participation, trust in the police, and the design of specific measures for critical areas.

Additionally, the territorial distribution of Ecatepec will be restructured into seven zones, 27 sectors, 230 quadrants, and 13,000 neighborhood networks, with the aim of strengthening collaboration between the population, local authorities, and the federal government. Critical points of insecurity and violence, such as robberies and homicides, will be identified and targeted, mainly in the 10 mentioned neighborhoods, with the support of the Mexican Navy Secretariat.

Moreover, in Ecatepec, an operation has begun to check passengers on public transportation, with security controls for men and women by police elements, especially to ensure the safety of female users. Horacio Duarte Olivares, Secretary General of Government, reported that the municipalities with the most reported crimes are Toluca, Ecatepec, and Naucalpan.

In addition, starting January 1, 2025, the Ecatepec government has decided to suspend the imposition of Municipal Transit fines for three months to combat corruption actions such as theft and extortion by local transit elements.
