The first legal abortion clinic was inaugurated in Guadalajara. This space offers its services without stigma and with safe processes for women and people capable of gestation. Following the decriminalization of voluntary abortion up to 12 weeks in Jalisco, where the capital is located, the clinic will prevent those needing this service from having to travel to Mexico City, where abortion has been legal since 2007.
Gynecologist Alfredo Valdez González, founder of the clinic 'Ginecea', mentioned that in the 15 years of experience in Mexico City they have attended many women from Jalisco seeking this type of service. This clinic will be able to receive patients from neighboring states to Jalisco where abortion has not yet been decriminalized, such as Nayarit, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Colima, or Aguascalientes.
The clinic 'Ginecea' will follow the protocols suggested by the World Health Organization for safe abortion. Specialized doctors will provide counseling on procedures and emotional support to patients, aiming to offer a warm and stigma-free service for those who decide to terminate a pregnancy.
The procedures to be carried out at the clinic include Manual Endouterine Aspiration (AMEU) and the medication abortion protocol, considered safe and effective during the first trimester of pregnancy. The social stigma surrounding pregnancy termination has been identified as the main reason some women in Mexico do not seek help, influenced by moral and religious judgments.
The SCJN determined the unconstitutionality of the crime of abortion throughout Mexico in 2021, leading to the decriminalization of voluntary abortion in more than 20 states of the country. Although there are still 11 states where pregnancy termination is only permitted in cases of sexual assault or other legal grounds.
