Urgent Health Warning: Dengue Cases Rise in Jalisco

The Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) reported the confirmation of 21 new deaths from dengue in Jalisco between June and October 2024, bringing the total to 26 deaths this year. Of these new deaths, 38% correspond to men and 61% to women, with ages ranging from 6 to 80 years, being the group of 65 years and older the most affected.

71% of the 26 deaths are presumed to be due to comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, or both. The municipalities with the highest incidence of deaths from dengue are Guadalajara, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Zapopan, Puerto Vallarta, Tonalá, and El Salto.

In epidemiological week 45, 1,216 new cases have been reported in Jalisco, representing a 25% decrease compared to the previous week, which reported 1,600 cases. This decrease in cases is encouraging, but the population is urged to maintain preventive measures at home to combat dengue.

The SSJ urges the population to use the strategy "LAVA, TAPA, VOLTEA Y TIRA" to eliminate potential breeding sites for dengue-transmitting mosquitoes. It is vital to reduce mosquito breeding sites, especially to protect people with chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, who have a higher risk of complications from this disease.
