Sorghum producers in Guanajuato have secured a written commitment from federal and state authorities to guarantee a price of 6,000 pesos per ton of sorghum following their ongoing protests on the Celaya-Salamanca highway. The Peasant Agricultural Movement reported in a statement on social media that the minutes signed at the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) include the retroactive application of the payment for those who have already delivered their harvest. According to the collective's position, the commitment will not set a volume limit, meaning all farmers will be able to access the economic benefit. As part of the negotiations, the protesters agreed to keep one lane of the highway open while dialogue tables continue. The producers specified that this Friday, October 31st, they will hold a new meeting with authorities to define how the agreement will be financed and on what deadlines it will be fulfilled. They will also seek to establish contact with representatives of the industry that buys sorgho before the next planting cycle. They stated that the progress was achieved thanks to the pressure exerted by the protests, but they warned that they will not remove the encampment until the promised payment is made effective and there are guarantees of compliance.
