The Anti-Extortion Squad of the Secretary of Security and Peace of Guanajuato managed to thwart a case of virtual kidnapping, preventing a family from making a payment for their son's ransom. The father reported the case to the emergency number 800 TE CUIDO after receiving a phone extortion. Following an operation in different public places, the young man was found safe and sound on Monday afternoon and reunited with his family.
The modus operandi of virtual kidnappings differs from traditional kidnappings, as they are carried out through phone deception and psychological manipulation, avoiding physical contact with the victims. In this specific case, the criminals demanded immediate deposits in convenience stores or bank accounts. This incident is the second thwarted virtual kidnapping in less than 48 hours in Guanajuato.
The 800 TE CUIDO line is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing confidential and specialized care to victims of extortion and virtual kidnapping in Guanajuato. In this particular case, the criminals made the father believe that his son had been kidnapped and demanded an initial payment, promising to complete the transaction the following day.
After receiving the complaint, authorities activated an intelligence and video surveillance operation from C5i, managing to locate the young man’s vehicle at the Salamanca Bus Station. Through data analysis, it was confirmed that the victim had boarded a bus bound for Irapuato.
