In the year 2024, Pirelli Mexico and the Government of the State of Guanajuato have decided to expand their commitment to the conservation of the Protected Natural Area (ANP) Cuenca de la Esperanza. With an investment of 4.1 million pesos allocated for environmental restoration and the generation of temporary jobs in rural communities, the company has decided to adopt an additional 100 hectares in this natural reserve located in the municipality of Guanajuato. With reforestation actions, water retention, and biodiversity protection, this agreement was announced by Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo.
As part of this agreement, measures will be carried out such as reforestation with native species, the construction of berm ditches for water retention, the installation of filtration dams, and the maintenance of perimeter fences to protect the area. In addition to benefiting the environment, this investment will also have a positive impact on local communities by promoting the creation of temporary jobs.
Since 2013, Pirelli has been committed to the conservation of the Cuenca de la Esperanza, starting with the adoption of 20 hectares and increasing its commitment over the years. This protected area is home to a diverse fauna including mammals such as the white-tailed deer, the bobcat, the ringtail, and the spotted skunk, as well as more than 170 bird species, some of which are threatened.
The Cuenca de la Esperanza is a key ecosystem for Guanajuato, as the La Esperanza dam, located in this area, provides approximately 8% of the city's annual water consumption. Also present at the signing of the agreement were the mayor of Guanajuato, Samantha Smith Gutiérrez, the Secretary of Water and Environment, José Lara Lona, and the Manager of Safety, Health and Environment, and Sustainability for the North America Region of Pirelli, Jorge Martín Martínez.
The predominant vegetation in the Cuenca de la Esperanza is oak forest, in association with species such as madrone and pingüica.
