In response to the growing concern over the increase in robberies committed by motorcycle thieves in Guanajuato, a reform to the State Mobility Law and the state Fiscal Code has been proposed. The aim is to establish a State Control Registry of Motorcycles and a Motorcycle Merchants Registry to address this issue.
According to data from the Secretary of Finance, Guanajuato currently has approximately 600,000 registered motorcycles, but it is estimated that between 180,000 and 200,000 are circulating without registration, making it difficult to control and trace them in the case of crimes. Deputy Víctor Manuel Zanella Huerta highlighted the importance of taking action against the rise of these crimes that affect the people of Guanajuato.
The thefts perpetrated by motorcycle thieves have been captured in videos that have gone viral on social media, generating outrage among the public. These criminals strip victims of their belongings in a matter of seconds, without anyone being able to intervene.
In a working meeting, the Attorney General of the State emphasized the importance of reviewing the data exchange between authorities and ensuring the protection of the gathered information. Deputy José Erandi Bermúdez Méndez stressed that the aim is not to increase bureaucratic procedures but to close the gaps that allow criminals to operate with impunity.
The implementation of the proposed registries seeks to enhance security in the state and prevent motorcycles from being used to commit crimes. In March 2024, there were recorded cases of robberies committed by criminals on motorcycles in areas such as Boulevard Villas de Irapuato and Colonia Moderna.
