Guanajuato Strengthens Health System 5 Years Post-Pandemic

Five years after the start of the pandemic, Guanajuato continues to reinforce its health system to prevent new outbreaks of COVID-19. A Sentinel Surveillance model has been implemented, and 14 specialized units have been established to monitor respiratory diseases. Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, Secretary of Health of the state, emphasizes that while the incidence of cases has decreased, the virus continues to circulate, requiring constant surveillance to protect the most vulnerable population.

According to data from the Secretariat of Health of Guanajuato, by epidemiological week 8 of 2025, 25 confirmed cases and one death have been recorded. In Guanajuato, the 14 sentinel units analyze the evolution of the virus through various methods, including sampling 10% of mild respiratory illness cases, monitoring 100% of severe cases and suspected deaths from viral pneumonia, as well as analyzing samples in state laboratories to detect emerging variants.

This surveillance model allows for timely detection of any possible resurgence and taking preventive measures to protect the population. Guanajuato has consolidated three key actions to strengthen its health system and reduce the risks of new outbreaks: ongoing vaccination with the application of boosters in vulnerable groups, hospital reinforcement through investment in infrastructure and training of medical personnel, and awareness and prevention through informative campaigns to promote the use of protective measures during high-risk seasons.

Although the numbers of cases are low compared to the early years of the pandemic, surveillance remains active throughout the state. Since 2023, Sentinel Surveillance in Guanajuato has allowed for strategic monitoring of COVID-19 without the need to count each case individually.
