Preventive Measures Against Dengue in Guanajuato

In Guanajuato, health authorities have begun inspecting cemeteries due to concerns that stagnant water and trash present during the Day of the Dead celebrations could spread dengue mosquito larvae. They warn that seven days after the festivities there could be outbreaks if cleaning and hygiene recommendations are not followed.

The Secretary of Health, in collaboration with Health Jurisdiction VIII, reported on the risk of mosquito proliferation because visitors often use water in vases to decorate graves during the Day of the Dead. In response to this situation, the vector department will conduct inspections of vases and basins containing water to prevent the reproduction of mosquitoes that carry diseases such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, reported 93 new cases of dengue in the state, totaling 1,950 infections. Recommendations include washing and covering containers that accumulate water, turning buckets over, and eliminating objects that can store liquid.

Dengue symptoms, such as high fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash, can manifest 7 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The cooperation of the public in these preventive actions is essential to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
