Abortion Decriminalization Initiative in Guanajuato

Feminist organizations in Guanajuato are warning about the lack of responses from Congress regarding the decriminalization of abortion, despite the Supreme Court's resolution.

Abortion Decriminalization Initiative in Guanajuato

One of the first initiatives presented in the current legislature of the Congress of the State of Guanajuato is the decriminalization of abortion, which was proposed for analysis almost a month ago. However, there is still no guarantee that this initiative will be included in the agenda or that a response will be received from the institutions requested for review.

Some feminist organizations in the state, such as Las Libres, have pointed out that the approval of this initiative is not necessary, arguing that the Congress is ignoring something that has already been resolved by the Supreme Court in favor of the decriminalization of abortion. This proposal was pushed by the benches of Movimiento Ciudadano and Morena since the first ordinary session, but it was shelved in the previous legislature.

The initiative has been sent for review and comments to various institutions, including the Justice Tribunal of the State of Guanajuato, the Legal Advisory of the Executive, the Secretary of Health, the Institute for Guanajuatan Women, the State Human Rights Prosecutor's Office, and the Legislative Research Institute of Congress. All these entities have a period of 20 days to analyze it and provide a response, after which the topic will be discussed in an ordinary session.
