Security crisis in Guanajuato: lawmakers demand dismissals

In the session of the Permanent Deputation, Ernesto Millán Soberanes, from the Morena parliamentary group, presented a point of agreement requesting the removal of two officials from the municipal government of Guanajuato: the Secretary of Public Security and the General Director of Legal Services. The proposal was made during the general matters of the last session, pointing out that the current administration, led by Samantha Smith, is facing a security crisis and disagreements with the citizenry.

One of the main arguments for the dismissal of the Secretary of Security is the perception of public insecurity. According to the National Urban Public Security Survey, 66% of the population over 18 years old feels unsafe in the municipality of Guanajuato, based on data from October to December 2024. Millán Soberanes has expressed that the Secretary of Security downplays the data on violence and has failed to implement an effective strategy, advocating for a change in the municipality's security strategy.

Additionally, the deputy also requested the removal of the head of the Legal Directorate, arguing that this official was convicted in the first instance for the crime of bribery, with the sentence being confirmed in the penal court. It is questioned how the mayor can talk about combating corruption while keeping a official with a criminal record on her team.

The point of agreement was referred to the Commission on Municipal Affairs for analysis and opinion. The legislator emphasized the importance of the city council prioritizing the well-being of the population and not keeping officials for political favors.
