192 years ago, in 1833, the First Light Battalion was formed in Guanajuato, a military unit whose bravery and loyalty led President Juárez to grant them the privilege of carrying arms and wearing uniforms of the Federal Army until 1964, along with Oaxaca. This distinction marked the military identity of the state for decades.
The First Light Battalion, later transformed into the State Public Security Forces (FSPE), played a crucial role in the history of Mexico, participating in conflicts such as the war against Texas, the North American Intervention, and the siege of Querétaro. Their reputation led them to be key in the defense of Puebla in 1862, when President Juárez relied on their bravery to protect the capital and the Republic.
Over the years, the FSPE have kept alive the vocation to serve and withstand during critical moments. With 9 thousand troops distributed in Urban, Rural, and Highway Police divisions, they continue to protect state security. Their legacy of courage and commitment endures in every member of the corporation, who remain steadfast in the face of the most challenging situations.
During the Siege of Puebla in 1863, the people from Guanajuato faced a fierce bombardment at Fort Iturbide that reduced the Penitentiary to rubble. Despite the difficult circumstances, they did not retreat and managed to hold their position, protecting the eastern front of the republican siege. Their resistance and bravery under constant fire are recorded in the military history of the country.
In the words of historian Justo Sierra, the people from Guanajuato of the First Light Battalion were called "the magnificent division of Guanajuato, perfectly organized and armed." Their heroism in crucial moments such as May 5, 1862, during the Battle of Puebla, is still remembered and celebrated as an example of loyalty and sacrifice in the defense of the homeland.
