The governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, has initiated the implementation of the Sonora Water Plan 2023-2053 with the goal of ensuring access to water for future generations. This plan, which responds to the impact of climate change and drought in the country, seeks to guarantee coordinated solutions among different levels of government and aligns with national strategies for sustainable water management.
During his administration, significant resources have been invested to improve water supply in the region, including the construction of wells, rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, and modernization of distribution systems in various municipalities of Sonora. In 2024, 313.6 million pesos were allocated to strategic projects that have contributed to optimizing the supply of drinking water.
Among the actions taken are the modernization of the Independencia Aqueduct, the construction of the Bypass in Hermosillo, and the acquisition of equipment to ensure supply. These initiatives have reduced drought levels in the region and secured a state and federal investment of 2,161 million pesos in water infrastructure for the current year.
Governor Durazo Montaño has urged the municipalities of Sonora to join efforts and resources in local water management projects, such as the modernization of distribution networks, construction of treatment plants, and efficient irrigation systems. He highlighted the importance of these works to ensure an adequate water supply in all municipalities in the state.
Additionally, an educational campaign titled "Water: Take Care of It, It's Running Out" will be launched aimed at schools and communities to raise awareness about the responsible use of water. The governor emphasized that collaboration among society, government, academia, and the private sector is essential to find innovative and sustainable solutions in water matters and to ensure a future with water availability for all families in Sonora.
