A new controversy has arisen in Hermosillo after a group of Catholic faithful formally requested Archbishop Ruy Rendón Leal to investigate a priest who allegedly celebrated a "union and blessing" between people of the same sex.
The case came to light after the circulation of images of a letter addressed to the ecclesiastical authority, as well as a video of the ceremony circulating on social networks, which has intensified the debate within the religious community.
What do the faithful argue in the letter sent?
In the document, disseminated by journalist Michelle Rivera, the signatories state that the act performed by the priest "could constitute a simulation of the sacrament of marriage", as it included elements proper to a sacramental rite.
Furthermore, it warns that the situation has caused "doctrinal confusion, scandal, and even annoyance among the faithful".
The signatories also refer to the document Fiducia supplicans, stating that while it allows for certain pastoral blessings, it "explicitly excludes any form that may resemble a marital rite or lead to confusion".
Finally, the petitioners request that, if irregularities are confirmed, sanctions be applied in accordance with the law and clear guidelines be issued to prevent future cases. They mention the imposition of hands and the verbal expression: "I ratify in the name of God", which they say caused confusion among the attendees.
The letter cites canon 1379 of the Code of Canon Law, which sanctions the simulation of sacraments, and requests the opening of a preliminary investigation in accordance with canon 1717. They emphasize that their intention is "the safeguarding of the common good of the Church, the integrity of the sacraments, and the coherent testimony of the faith".
The journalist shared images of the letter on her personal X account, as well as a video clip where the couple appears to be making their vows.
