Cancellation of Tennis Tournament After Kidnapping Incident

A group of underage tennis players were rescued by police from the State Public Security Commissioner thanks to successful coordination and intelligence work. Fortunately, the young athletes were found in good health, although medical services were requested to provide them with more detailed care.

Members of the State Public Security Force, in collaboration with the Attorney General's Office of Guanajuato, accompanied the athletes and later delivered them to their respective families. This rescue occurred after an attack on Traffic elements in Celaya last July, which led to the cancellation of the Under-20 World Cup event in that city.

The virtual kidnapping that ten athletes and their coach suffered in Irapuato resulted in the cancellation of the tournament scheduled in this city. The Mexican Tennis Federation officially announced the cancellation of the J30 event, endorsed by the International Tennis Federation, in order to ensure the safety and peace of mind of the young underage participants.

The FMT has been in constant communication with the affected families and after analyzing the situation with the authorities, they decided that the cancellation of the tournament was the best option at that moment. In J30 tennis tournaments, young athletes participate in youth category events that are part of a circuit that awards points to players for their participation in future tournaments.

The rescue of the athletes was carried out after a report of virtual kidnapping attended by the Secretary of Security and Peace of the state of Guanajuato in conjunction with the Attorney General's Office and municipal authorities of Irapuato. The intervention allowed for the location of the victims, one adult, six underage females, and four underage males, who were part of a tennis team and were still in contact with the extortionist.
