Club León Faces Debt Resolution Challenges

The mayor of León, Alejandra Gutiérrez, has ruled out the possibility of forgiving the million-dollar debt that Club León has with the city's Water and Sewer System (SAPAL), which amounts to 52 million pesos. In a council session on March 13, the mayor emphasized that the Municipal Tax Law prohibits the forgiveness of debt and explained that the club has requested a reconsideration of the total payment.

According to the mayor, the request for reconsideration is based on the lack of a water meter to control the club's discharges into the drainage system, and SAPAL will analyze this request. For his part, Enrique De Haro Maldonado, general director of SAPAL, mentioned last August that they expected to close an agreement with Club León to settle the debt.

The 52 million peso debt has accumulated over the last 12 years due to water discharges into the drainage system made by the football team. The mayor stated that an adjustment in the owed amount could be considered, but emphasized that a complete forgiveness cannot be carried out due to current legal provisions.

During the council session, Morena councilors, Guillermo Medina and Vanessa Montes de Oca, expressed their concern about the possibility of forgiving the debt to a company with economic income, and lamented that this situation has prolonged over several municipal administrations.
