León Prepares for More Intense Rainfall in the 2026 Season

In León, the alert for the upcoming rainy season is not about how many times it will rain, but about how it might rain. The data that changes the preventive approach for the responsible authorities for 2026 is that less frequent but more abundant, heavier rains accompanied by wind and electrical discharges are expected, according to the Municipal Civil Protection. This implies a different risk than usual. Not necessarily more rainy days, but more aggressive events capable of causing damage in less time. During a press conference led by the mayor of León, Alejandra Gutiérrez, the municipality reported that it is already working on preventive tasks for the season that officially begins in mid-May. Among the risks under surveillance are pluvial and river floods, thunderstorms, hail, strong winds, sinkholes, cracking, and possible landslides on slopes. Another data point that caught attention was the 2025 balance; although last year León accumulated 725 millimeters of rain, above the annual average of 604 millimeters, there were fewer floods and waterlogging thanks to infrastructure works, according to the authority. They are preparing on several fronts. Civil Protection reported that it issues daily meteorological monitoring during the season and maintains surveillance on watercourses, rivers, and streams, in addition to tours to detect vulnerable people in public spaces. It also has a permanent shelter and five spaces that can be enabled as temporary shelters in case of an emergency. The authority recalled that the rainy season in the Pacific begins on May 15 and extends until November 30, while in the Atlantic it begins on April 1 and ends on the same date. León is not only preparing for it to rain, but also so that when it rains heavily, the impact is less.
