Arrest of Suspect in Attack on Police in León

Juan Esgardo 'N' has been charged with murder and attempted murder of two police officers in León, Mexico. One officer was killed and another severely injured during the December 28 attack.

The Public Prosecutor's Office managed to establish the probable responsibility of Juan Esgardo "N" in the events through evidence analysis and intelligence work. With sufficient evidence, the agency presented the case to a judge, who determined the link to process of the accused. As a precautionary measure, his preventive detention was ordered while the judicial process progresses.

During the criminal proceedings, the Public Prosecutor's Office will continue to present evidence. The attack occurred when two agents were in a pickup truck and were surprised by an individual who opened fire on them from a motorcycle. Tragically, one of the agents lost his life at the scene, while his partner was seriously injured and received urgent medical attention.

After the attack, the Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation to identify the responsible party and reaffirmed its commitment to carry out a thorough process that ensures the perpetrator faces justice and that the rule of law is upheld in Guanajuato. The Attorney General's Office of the State of Guanajuato achieved the connection to a process of Juan Esgardo "N", accused of homicide and attempted homicide against the two agents of the Secretariat of Security, Prevention, and Citizen Protection of León.

The incident took place on December 28, 2024, in the León II neighborhood, when the two agents, dedicated to analysis and investigation tasks, were attacked while traveling in a pickup truck and stopped at the intersection of Prolongación León II Boulevard.
