Mexico police chief detained over disappearance of workers

The director of the Municipal Police of Matehuala, Jorge Peña, was detained along with other elements of the corporation for his alleged participation in the disappearance of seven electricians. According to media reports and unofficial versions, the detention of the commander would be related to the disappearance of the electricians, who were found alive after an operation in the Potosi Plateau region, with the participation of state, federal, and military forces. To date, there is no official confirmation from state or municipal authorities regarding the detentions or the possible crimes attributed to the secured elements, although a photograph of the presumably detained commander was circulated. According to reports, the men, from Cárdenas, had left since March 16 to carry out work at various points in the Potosi plateau and were returning on the Matehuala-Cárdenas road when communication with them was lost. Their disappearance activated a search operation that lasted more than 48 hours, until their location and subsequent reunion with their families under a strong security deployment. One of those affected stated that during their captivity, they were informed that they would be forced to join a criminal organization. 'We thought we would never see our families again,' recounted one of the electricians after being released. The investigations remain open, and so far, no authority has publicly detailed the reported detentions. However, on his social networks, the governor of San Luis Potosí, Ricardo Gallardo Carmona, stated that he met with the seven victims before reuniting them with their families and affirmed that they will continue actions for security in the region. 'I met with the workers located on the outskirts of Matehuala, who are safe and in the process of reuniting with their families (...) We continue to strengthen actions that ensure peace in our region.' Finally, he said that comprehensive support was provided to the families of the seven workers throughout the rescue process.
