Activist Searching for Missing Persons Murdered in Mexico

Rubí Patricia Gómez-Tagle, identified as a member of a collective searching for missing persons, was found murdered this Friday in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, where President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is on a visit. According to local media, the woman was a member of the collective Corazones Unidos por una Misma Causa, an organization made up of searching mothers who participate in locating missing persons in southern Sinaloa. The body was found inside a home located in the Jabalíes subdivision, on Santa Rosa Avenue, near Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta, an area where the president held her morning press conference hours earlier. According to the information, the activist had apparently been attacked with a bladed weapon inside the house, where her body was found in the living room. The Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office confirmed in a statement that “this Friday, February 27, 2026, the discovery of a woman deceased inside a home in Mazatlán was recorded.” According to the agency, “according to preliminary information, the victim could be part of a collective searching for missing persons.” The Attorney General's Office detailed that the Police Investigation and personnel from the Forensic Services Directorate are working at the scene, carrying out the corresponding procedures and processing the location. “According to the data collected so far, the woman has injuries in different parts of her body, presumably caused by a puncturing-cutting weapon,” the authority stated. The institution added that it continues with the investigations to clarify the facts and determine the circumstances of the homicide. “You may be interested > Sandra Ávila Beltrán defeats Telemundo for using her image in 'Queen of the South'; she must pay her 448 thousand pesos.” In a separate statement, the searching mothers collective Sabuesos Guerreras affirmed that the activist's murder, on the very day of Sheinbaum's visit to Mazatlán, is not only an “individual tragedy” but also a “challenge to authority” and confirms that the discourse of “hugs” or “protection” has “not reached the ground where the mothers dig the earth.” Likewise, they emphasized that the crime is a “message of absolute impunity on the part of the perpetrators.” The murder occurs amidst a context of persistent violence in Sinaloa, where federal authorities have reinforced the presence of security forces after clashes between criminal groups and operations against drug trafficking organizations.
