Class Suspension in Mazatlán Due to Violence

The spurious and indifferent government has generated unrest in the population due to the violent events that recently occurred in the city of Mazatlán. In response to the situation, the Southern Regional Unit of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS) announced the suspension of in-person classes for Monday, October 28, stating that all educational activities will be carried out virtually during the week in this port, maintaining the schedule for the night shift.

On the other hand, the municipal government of Mazatlán issued a statement through its social networks urging the population to remain sheltered due to the violent events that have taken place in the city. Reports indicate that armed confrontations have been recorded at various points, creating an atmosphere of insecurity in the area.

According to local sources, a heavy gunfire incident was reported in several neighborhoods of Mazatlán during the night on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and another injury. The injured individual was identified as a taxi driver who was hit by a stray bullet and received medical attention at an ISSSTE clinic. The shooting caused fear in the population, reflected in the absence of people in the streets and the presence of individuals sheltered in commercial establishments.

Various videos circulating on social networks show scenes of the chaotic situation experienced during the night in Mazatlán, with sounds of gunfire and testimonies from frightened individuals. In one of the shared videos, a child can be heard asking his father in fear if the noises they hear are gunshots and if they are in danger, highlighting the impact of violence on the community.

In light of this situation, the university community of the UAS received a message of reassurance from the institution, emphasizing the priority of the safety of all its members and announcing the continuation of classes in virtual mode to ensure the safety of students and academic staff.
