Murder of Fisherman Leader in Mexicali

The fishing leader of the port of San Felipe, Sunshine Antonio Rodríguez Peña, was shot dead on Saturday while selling his products on the streets of Mexicali, Baja California. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda assured that there will be no impunity in the case and that it will reach 'the last consequences.' In a message, the governor expressed that all necessary instances will be sought to ensure justice and catch those responsible. 'We have requested the State Attorney General to clarify this incident. Elena Andrade will have all the needed facilities from the State Secretariat of Citizen Security as part of the investigation,' she noted.

On Saturday morning, Rodríguez broadcast live on his Facebook account to announce that he was on the streets of Río Presidio and Víctor Rosales, inviting people to come buy his products. Around 12:00 PM, a call was received at 911 reporting gunfire in the area. So far, there have been no reports of arrests related to the incident. Rodríguez Peña was arrested in 2020 for allegedly leading a network trafficking totoaba, a species at risk of extinction.

Paramedics from the Red Cross arrived at the scene, who found the fishing leader without vital signs lying on the sidewalk. Witnesses told local media that the attackers, who were masked, fled in a white 'pick-up' truck, prompting the activation of an operation to locate them. The fishing leader was released in February 2023, after two years of preventive detention, when the judge indicated that the Attorney General's Office (FGR) had not presented evidence of his responsibility, and he was declared innocent of the crime of organized crime affecting the environment.
