According to information from "El Norte", the environmental pollution affecting Monterrey and its metropolitan area could cause FIFA to withdraw the venue for the World Cup scheduled for 2026 in the city. During a private event with the state governor and members of his cabinet, the Host City Manager of the venue, Alejandro Hütt, mentioned the poor air quality in Monterrey as a matter of international concern.
Hütt warned that if pollution continues to rise, FIFA could reconsider the selection of Monterrey as the host city for the tournament. In the last two weeks, pollution levels in the city have reached worrying figures, exacerbated by recorded winds and more than 200 fires in the metropolitan area.
Since it was announced that BBVA Stadium would host World Cup matches, the State has been working to ensure that Nuevo León is the best venue for this sporting event. Governor Samuel García mentioned that several projects, such as the remodeling of Monterrey International Airport, new Metro lines, and other infrastructures, would be part of efforts to enhance the appeal of the region.
Additionally, a "40-day Tourism Passport" is being developed to provide visitors with a detailed guide to the available tourist attractions during their stay in the State to enjoy the World Cup.
