Two years after its closure, the government of Adrián de la Garza will reopen the Vía Deportiva in Monterrey this Sunday. This measure is part of the current municipal administration's strategies to improve security and strengthen social bonds. The mayor highlighted that during his previous terms, restricting the express lanes of the Par Vial Constitución-Morones Prieto on Sundays had positive results in promoting physical activity among the community.
Regarding the reopening, De la Garza mentioned that the Vía Deportiva was in similar conditions as it was before its closure and announced possible adjustments to improve it according to the needs of the athletes who use it. The mayor expressed a commitment to work so that the population of Monterrey and the rest of the metropolitan area can enjoy safe and healthy environments for recreation.
The Vía Deportiva was established in 2019 by Mayor Adrián de la Garza and is the third-largest space of its kind in the country. During the designated hours, Sundays from 06:30 to 10:30, a stretch of 16.4 kilometers on both avenues is allocated for people to exercise safely. From its creation until 2021, there were 16,000 registered athletes, a number expected to grow to 35,000 now that it reopens.
To ensure the continuity of the Vía Deportiva, the Secretariat of Public Services carried out repairs on the route, including fixing 36 potholes. During the operation of the circuit, Traffic will provide support through the assignment of officers and use of signage for the safety of users.
The director of Physical Culture and Municipal Sports detailed the operation of the circuit and mentioned that the usual access points will be maintained. A basic regulation will also be disseminated that establishes rules such as the prohibition of invading lanes, the requirement for adults to be present with children under 8 years old, and respect for the entry rules.
The Vía Deportiva will be used for recreational and high-performance sports, dividing the lanes according to the activities to be carried out, such as running, walking, cycling, and skating. The municipal president assured that the initiative will not affect traffic, as it takes place early on Sundays, avoiding peak traffic hours.
In the announcement of the reactivation of the Vía Deportiva, former cyclists and Olympic competitors such as Raúl Alcalá and Victoria Velasco were present, the latter having participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
