Deputy Reyna Reyes, from Morena, presented a request to ask the Ministry of Public Education to suspend the activities of teaching staff in schools in Nuevo León due to the drop in temperatures in the region. While student attendance during cold days is left to the discretion of the parents, the presence of teachers is mandatory, a situation that the legislator seeks to change.
In her request, Reyes pointed out that educational staff face risks due to extreme weather conditions, such as respiratory illnesses and difficulties in getting to the schools, which could affect their performance. Additionally, she mentioned the lack of infrastructure in some municipalities where primary and secondary schools lack electrical service, which would be exacerbated by the arrival of low temperatures.
In Salinas Victoria, for example, 34% of schools do not have electricity, followed by García with 23%, Juárez with 16.3%, and Monterrey with 7%. In light of this situation, the deputy called for making timely and clear decisions regarding the attendance of educational staff, so they can plan their activities and meet academic goals without putting their well-being at risk.
"It is imperative to provide them with the necessary conditions to preserve their health and safety, considering the possibility that they may stay home during cold days," emphasized the legislator. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of ensuring continuity in learning through digital platforms or other available mechanisms during the coldest days of the week, which are expected to be Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus two degrees.
