Nuevo León Government Improves Air Quality

The Government of the State of Nuevo León, through the Ministry of Environment, is working together with the Federation to implement measures that improve air quality in the city. In a meeting with authorities from Semarnat and INECC, the creation of the Metropolitan Environmental Commission and possible changes in legislation were agreed upon.

The head of the Ministry of Environment, Alfonso Martínez Muñoz, emphasized the importance of establishing concrete measures that can have a significant impact on the Monterrey metropolitan area, such as limiting the percentage of sulfur in fuels. It is also planned to work on an agreement for the Metropolitan Environmental Commission and improve air quality forecasts in collaboration with UNAM.

During the meeting, information from studies conducted by Tec de Monterrey and the Air Quality Observatory was shared, aiming to identify problems and define measures to implement. The importance of modifying the way air quality forecasts are communicated was highlighted, providing information for two days along with recommendations.

The report presented by the agency highlighted the positive impact of the actions taken so far, showing a reduction in PM10 particle concentrations. Additionally, inspection and monitoring actions were reported, including the closure of quarries in Escobedo and various sanctions for environmental offenses.

With the arrival of cold front number 29, adverse conditions for air quality are expected in the coming hours, especially due to the stability caused by the thermal inversion phenomenon. Efforts will continue to improve air quality in Nuevo León by implementing effective measures and coordination with different entities and organizations.
