Following the arrest of Next Energy's owner, Eugenio Maiz Domene, by authorities in Aguascalientes, the mayor of Monterrey, Adrián de la Garza, dismissed any possibility of damages or irregularities due to a contract that remains in effect with the energy company. Former mayor Luis Donaldo Colosio reduced its cost from over 7 billion pesos to 4.9 billion and shortened its duration by 20 years; in De la Garza's third administration, the contract was resumed with unclear specifications. In this regard, MC leader Baltazar Martínez Ríos stated that it is 'incongruent' that with a similar contract, the owner of Next Energy ended up in preventive prison in Aguascalientes, while in Monterrey a multi-million dollar contract was ratified. 'In the case of Monterrey, there have been no economic losses,' declared the mayor, without specifying what legal procedures are being carried out for the breach of the first part of the contract and its renegotiation. Despite the mayor's measured tone, there is tension within his cabinet due to the municipal comptroller, Jovita Morín. 'I was a firsthand witness to Next Energy's breach, which as part of the contract had to build a photovoltaic plant in Cerralvo... while in the corrupt government of Adrián de la Garza the business continues where municipal finances lose and the PRI businessman wins, the municipality of Aguascalientes denounced him for fraud and he was arrested in mid-December and is in preventive prison,' he added. The PAN member was questioned in 2022 for being involved in a contract for up to 28 billion pesos granted by the State of Aguascalientes. Likewise, the official is involved in the contract maintained by the Monterrey capital. 'We have been following the actions being carried out with punctuality.'
