Argentine striker Ángel Correa, a key piece for Tigres UANL in Mexican football, stated on Friday that the Argentina national team remains the top candidate to win the 2026 World Cup, driven by Lionel Messi's leadership.
"As long as Messi is on the field, Argentina will always be the favorite; that is clear for us," affirmed the striker for the university team firmly.
Correa, who was part of the historic squad that lifted the World Cup in Qatar 2022, is working intensively to convince Lionel Scaloni to grant him a place in the final squad for the next world championship.
"It's a reality that there is very little time left for the World Cup. In my head, I always want to go back, although I am aware of the competition. My job is to be prepared to convince the coach," added the Tigres forward.
It should be noted that in the 2026 World Cup (organized by Mexico, the United States, and Canada), the albiceleste leads Group J, where they will face Algeria, Jordan, and Austria.
Full commitment to Tigres and rejection of the MLS
Amid market rumors, Ángel Correa flatly rejected following in the footsteps of his former teammate Germán Berterame, who recently left Rayados de Monterrey to join Inter Miami of the MLS alongside Messi.
"No. The goal is to return to the Liga MX final," he concluded. "I am very happy and grateful to this team and this city."
Currently, Tigres occupies second place in the Clausura 2026 with 10 points. This Sunday, they will face a crucial match against Cruz Azul, who are third in the general table.
"I am fortunate to have participated in Qatar; it was a unique experience."
