In an assembly held in Morelos, Luis María Alcalde, national president of Morena, announced the possibility that in the future, plurinominal deputies and senators could be selected through a lottery method. This proposal would allow any party member, regardless of their position or level of recognition, to occupy a seat in Congress.
Alcalde emphasized that this system seeks to provide opportunities for grassroots members, such as market vendors or workers, who would hardly win in a survey, allowing them to represent the party in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. "These plurinominal seats have to be distributed among the party membership," she explained during her intervention.
Additionally, Alcalde highlighted the importance of keeping Morena as a party aligned with the ideals of the Fourth Transformation, stating that the challenge is to build a movement that transcends the present and is prepared for future generations. "We need to create a Morena for today, not for tomorrow or 2030, for the next generations," she said.
On the other hand, María Alcalde confirmed that the survey method will continue to be in effect for relative majority candidacies, as it allows citizens to choose the most well-known and qualified candidates for public office. She assured that the results of these surveys will be transparent and accessible to both members and citizens alike.
Alcalde recalled that in the early days of Morena, the use of the lottery was key in providing representation to marginalized social sectors, such as young people and farmers, which allowed the party to stand out for including people outside of traditional political elites.
Finally, the national president of Morena called on the members to respect the rules of the selection process, emphasizing that having clear and defined methods will strengthen internal unity and prevent conflicts within the party.
