On Sunday night, a train car owned by Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex) derailed in Nogales, Sonora, after traveling about 4 kilometers out of control from the company's yards. The incident, which occurred just 10 meters from the border with the United States, left no one injured, according to civil protection authorities. The events began after 11:30 PM on December 28, when the Nogales Control, Command, Communication, and Computing Center (C5) received an alert call. State civil protection reported that “the cargo consisted of dehydrated chili peppers, so it did not pose a risk to the population”. The only reported damage was “internal to Ferromex”, meaning damage to the railway company's own infrastructure. The report warned of “a train car traveling from south to north at high speed on the tracks”. According to the Sonora State Civil Protection Coordination, the car “experienced a malfunction during the night and left the yards of Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex), located in Lomas de Nogales”. Thanks to this mechanism, the car “derailed in a controlled manner, with no injuries or major damage reported”. The authorities were clear in stating that the vehicle “did not impact the international line”. The Civil Protection Coordination added that Ferromex “is already conducting the necessary investigations to determine the causes of the incident”. The municipal authorities of Nogales have also ruled out any risk to the population following the event. The endpoint of the journey was about 10 meters from the border. A factor that helped prevent the situation from being more serious was the type of cargo the car was carrying. From there, it began an unusual journey north. The car traveled approximately 4 kilometers towards the international line. However, “before reaching the dividing zone, there is a derail device that, in these cases, causes a controlled derailment”.
